Alex Smith To all Borderers, Hope you and your families are all well. Look forward to catching up with all the well kent faces at Berwick this weekend. I expect this years parade to be the biggest yet. Eileen Ferguson will be going with Eleanor and I this year. So get your storys about Wee Dennis at the ready. Good health to you all. Regards Alex. James Cahill My dad was Barney Cahill and he served with the KOSB during WW2. His friend was Billy Eastham. Dad was was a signaller in the battalion and he had a Captain who's nickname was PINKY. I think his real name was rose. I have pictures of dad and his section and also one of him in Lubeck on july 12th 1945. Dad was on queen beach on D-Day. Does anyone remember him or have any other photos of him with his platoon? Iwould be grateful to hear from anyone.
Bill Heaney Is everybody aware that the British Army is moving out of Osnabruck this week? ITV Border News has been running a report since yesterday of the Farewell Parades through the town before all the troops move out, and the various Barracks get handed back to the Germans for development. "Nae mair bevvies at the Green Windaes!" However, you can still get a beer or two at Berwick this weekend. There will be the usual Gathering at the King's Head, in Church Street on Friday night. You need to stay sober, though, for the Minden Parade on Saturday morning. Be at The Barracks by 1030hrs!
Andy Maltman Im Looking forward to meeting old friends at the parade in Berwick. Its also my first time, and Im staying from Friday till Sunday. It would be great to meet some old friends if you still remember me. Im leaving from the Manchester area if anyone wants a lift up, back or both ways. Regards
Sid Blackie If anybody is still looking for accommodation in Berwick for Minden Day (26th July`08), the King's Arms Hotel still has a few rooms. No private car park, just street parking.
Sid Blackie Now leaving on Sat. morning for Berwick, so if anybody needs a lift, as per my previous message.

Davie (Sid) blackie This is the 1st time I have participated in a Minden Day Parade out-with the Bn. Can anybody confirm the dress code, no fancy dress stuff, I would have twigged with this now a days. I found my Kipper the other day, so at least I have this. Can anybody also recommend a good watering hole, which also has accommodation for the Fri. & Sat. evening, where I might as well make the weekend of it? Also if anybody is looking for a wee lift on the Fri. afternoon from Edin. - Berwick, then back on the Sun. Drop me a wee e-mail (timings tbc). Sid.
A.W.PAXTON R.E.Ray Wells Hi Ray In reply to your letter for information regaurding your father.I myself am trying to get some information on my late fathers army career. He was also in the 2ND BATT K.O.S.B. He inlisted as a seventeen year old in 1937 in Perth Scotland,i am not sure if he was at Hilsea barracks in Portsmouth,or at Bordon, just between Petersfield and Farnham, all in Hampshire. He was then posted to India in 1943,was in India- Burma till 1946.Returned to U.K. Finished his engagement in 1948,served in the reserves then, recalled back to serve with the 1ST BATT in Korea. We as a family were born and brought up in Portsmouth. I have a few photos of dad mostly as a young soldier,a few in Korea.I do not have any large group photos of him, battalion, company ect. I know he went through some terrible times in India-Burma,and then again in Korea.Dad would not talk about his time in the army as it was too upsetting. But he promised me on my sixteenth birthday that i could have his medals if i sent for them.I have them and will always treasure them. Hope that we can communicate with each other so that we might be able to find out more about their army lives Andrew Wilson Paxton

William Tuna Crookshanks Hello Anyone known antyhing about this soldier? 33330 Pte.H.Robertson 4th KOSB PRESS Regards
David Harrison Further to my entry about James W Gough, Pte 6th KOSB who died on 19 October 1916. We have confirmed that the official record of his recruitment shows his place of birth at Baillestone, near Glasgow. We know that he was actually born in Bedlington. Northumberland and not in Glasgow. He had moved from Northumberland, where he was a miner, over to Baillestone to work in the Lanarkshire coalmines. He then was recrutied to join the KOSBs for the start of the Battle of the Somme. The regimental Book of Remembrance at Edinburgh Castle also shows Pte Gough born in Baillestone. I work be interested to hear more of the activiities of the 6th Btn KOSB leading up to the start of the battle, though I know someone has already contacted me about it. Best wishes David Harrison
David and Pat Harrison Pat and I have just returned from a very interesting Poppy Travel pilgrimage to The Somme. We were able to visit the grave of Pat's Grandfather, Pte James W Gough who died at the Butte de Walerncourt on the night of 19th October 1916. We were also lucky enought to be able to attend the Royal British Legion service of Remembrance at Thiepvall marking the start of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July. It was a most interesting trip, where we learnt a lot about the battle and were impressed by the organisation by the RBL. Best wishes David A Harrison
Barney Loughran CSgt Middy Middlemass Borderers you may have seen on the noticeboard of this site on 22June a post asking for information about Middy, what it did not make clear was that it was his daughter that was asking. She unfortunately has no photographs and has little knowledge of her dad. I`m sure that all those that were fortunate enough to know Middy would like to tell her a few stories that she can build up a picture of what a great bloke he was. the photo`s are already staring to roll in and she is considering a trip to Berwick on 26 July. If she makes it, seek her out and chat to her, she is family after all. Photographs and stories folks her email address can be got from her post on the noticeboard.

Lt Col G Wood Asst Regtl Sec Berwick Minden Day and Aden/Radfan Reunion - Press Release Members of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers who served in Aden and later took part in the Radfan Emergency are to hold a reunion at Berwick Barracks on Saturday 26 July 2008. The Battalion served in Aden from February 1962 until January 1964 only to return unexpectedly for the Radfan Emergency some four months later. It was on the 1st of May 1964, that the Battalion, stationed in Folkstone, were warned that elements were to start flying to Aden that evening. By 1500hrs Saturday 2nd May over five hundred members of the Battalion had left Shorncliffe for Lyneham in buses, and by the Monday morning they were in Aden. A period of acclimatisation followed and by mid-May the Battalion had moved up countrty to the Radfan area to carry out Military Control Operations in the Dhanaba Basin. The Battalion had some twenty-five engagements with the rebel tribesmen and suffered six wounded. This reunion will be part of the annual Minden Day celebrations, which commemorates the Battle of Minden on the 1st of August 1759. In memory of those who earned this great Battle Honour and who plucked roses from the gardens of Minden as they went forward to the Battle, members will be presented with a rose. Lieutenant Colonel George Wood, one of the organisers of the event says that it will be a marvellous opportunity for all ex-Borderers who took part in the Aden and Radfan operations to meet and renew acquaintances. He is expecting around 300 ex-Borderers including Bill Speakman VC and other family members to attend. A contingent from the Aden Veterans Association will also take part. The day will commence at 10am when the Pipes and Drums of The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, the Inter Scaldis Pipe Band from Holland, who are affiliated to the KOSB Association, and the Berwick and Eyemouth Pipe Bands along with the local group ‘Nancy’s Dancers’ will entertain. This will be followed by the presentation of Minden Roses at 1130am. At 1230pm the parade will march down Marygate in Berwick and past the Guildhall where Brigadier Andrew Jackson, currently the President of the KOSB Association, will take the salute in the company of the Civic Party. In addition to ex-members marching there will also be a Company of serving soldiers from The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, who have recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. Those wishing to attend should refgister with HHQ KOSB Tele: 01289 307426. Email: rhq.kosb@scotsborderers.army.mod.uk

Gordon Tyers I have just sent an e/mail to Mary expressing my sadness regarding Rosie`s death. I did manage to have a couple of drinks in Edinburgh when Rosie was home and it was great to see him again and reflect on our time in the K.O.S.B and talk about old pals, however he was feeling somewhat tired as he and Mary had been in Edinburgh all day.I just hope I managed to cheer him up a wee bit. Once again, my deepest sympathies go to Mary and family at this very sad time. Gordon Tyers.
