As your President, I send you and your families my warmest greetings on Minden Day, when we commemorate that famous victory 258 years ago, where the British Infantry – of which we were part – won ‘immortal glory’.
It is also fitting on this day to remember those of the Regiment who fell at the Third battle of Ypres, or Passchendaele, which commenced one hundred years ago yesterday. We shall be commemorating the Victoria Crosses won by CSM Skinner and CQMS Grimbaldeston on 16 August.
For those who you who could not be there, we held a marvellous Minden Day at Berwick on Saturday. In fine weather, we had almost 300 on parade, along with the Pipes and Drums of the Royal British Legion Berwick and the Inter Scaldis from The Netherlands. The roses were presented by Sir Philip Mawer, Chairman of the Berwick Archive and Museum Action Group, following which the parade marched through the town, where Sir Philip took the salute. Everyone then enjoyed a most convivial lunch, where friendships were renewed and campaigns re-fought!
We also received Minden Greetings from our Royal Patron, as follows:
With my best wishes to you all on this special day,
Once a Borderer, Always a Borderer.
