I have a photo showing an officer, two sergeants and ten other ranks with a note on the back with the date and a place name I can't read but starts with B. Can anybody tell me where they were and whether it might be possible to identify some of the men shown?

Job Opportunity in London
Posted by Major Toby Ingram on 17th July 2008

Whilst networking madly as we all do, I was recently contacted by an ex CO, now working in London. He is actively looking for an ex WO or LE officer to interview for a job in charge of security at a sports venue in South West London. I gather that the job pays around £35K so would suit someone living in the London area who already has a pension.

My recommendation is likely to get you an interview, so if you are interested, please get in touch at the email address listed or on 07770 491683.

Look forward to hearing from you. OABAAB

Trying to trace my Grand Father
Posted by Stephen Cooke on 7th July 2008

Hi there, I'm trying to trace my Grand Father 'Thomas William Cooke' of Nantwich in Cheshire; he fought with the first battalion at the Somme and was one of the few lucky survivors. I am told there is a picture of him and some of the battalion somewhere in Edinburgh Castle. Best regards, Stephen.

Help
Posted by Kevin Samuel on 5th July 2008

I am looking for News Paper clippings of when the KOSB's got the freedom of the City (Edinburgh) back in 1965. My late father was a piper and led the procession. My fathers name was David Samuel. I would appreciate any information I could get or would be pleased to have contact from anybody that new my father. My Uncle also served in the same regiment as a drummer (Robert Samuel)

Ian Cunningham
Posted by Barbara Lees on 1st July 2008

Is there anyone there who remembers my father, Ian Cunningham, from WW2?

He was "missing" at Dunkirk and rescued later, with his men.

He died in 1990. Since then his brother (now also deceased) and sister have told me a little about it. He never would.

If anyone can tell me about him, or how to find out more, I wold be very grateful. I have obtained his army records from Glasgow.

Berwick Minden Day and Aden Radfan Reunion - Press Release
Posted by Lt Col G Wood Asst Regtl Sec on 28th May 2008

Members of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers who served in Aden and later took part in the Radfan Emergency are to hold a reunion at Berwick Barracks on Saturday 26 July 2008. The Battalion served in Aden from February 1962 until January 1964 only to return unexpectedly for the Radfan Emergency some four months later. It was on the 1st of May 1964, that the Battalion, stationed in Folkstone, were warned that elements were to start flying to Aden that evening. By 1500hrs Saturday 2nd May over five hundred members of the Battalion had left Shorncliffe for Lyneham in buses, and by the Monday morning they were in Aden. A period of acclimatisation followed and by mid-May the Battalion had moved up countrty to the Radfan area to carry out Military Control Operations in the Dhanaba Basin. The Battalion had some twenty-five engagements with the rebel tribesmen and suffered six wounded.

This reunion will be part of the annual Minden Day celebrations, which commemorates the Battle of Minden on the 1st of August 1759. In memory of those who earned this great Battle Honour and who plucked roses from the gardens of Minden as they went forward to the Battle, members will be presented with a rose.

Lieutenant Colonel George Wood, one of the organisers of the event says that it will be a marvellous opportunity for all ex-Borderers who took part in the Aden and Radfan operations to meet and renew acquaintances. He is expecting around 300 ex-Borderers including Bill Speakman VC and other family members to attend. A contingent from the Aden Veterans Association will also take part.

The day will commence at 10am when the Pipes and Drums of The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, the Inter Scaldis Pipe Band from Holland, who are affiliated to the KOSB Association, and the Berwick and Eyemouth Pipe Bands along with the local group ‘Nancy’s Dancers’ will entertain. This will be followed by the presentation of Minden Roses at 1130am. At 1230pm the parade will march down Marygate in Berwick and past the Guildhall where Brigadier Andrew Jackson, currently the President of the KOSB Association, will take the salute in the company of the Civic Party. In addition to ex-members marching there will also be a Company of serving soldiers from The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, who have recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.

For those who wish to attend this parade pleas register with HHQ KOSB. Tele 01289 307426:

REGIMENTAL MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES
Posted by Lt Col G Wood Asst Regtl Sec on 27th September 2002

Researching KOSB Ancestors – Some Tips

· Most records prior to 1914 are held at the Public Record Office.

· Officers’ Records 1914-1921 are held at the Public Record Office.

· Further information about Officers can be found in the Army Lists. The Public Record Office and National Army Museum have virtually complete sets of these.

· Most Service Records of Other Ranks 1914-1920 were destroyed in 1940. Some of the surviving records are held at the Public Record Office; the majority are currently held at the Army Personnel Centre.

· Records of Officers and ORs post-1922 are held at the Army Personnel Centre.

· The Commonwealth War Graves Commissions has an on-line Debt of Honour Register.

· A few Nominal Rolls are held in the KOSB Regimental Archives.

· Digests of Services and some War Diaries are held in the KOSB Regimental Archives.

· (World War I only). If you have your ancestor’s regimental number, it may be possible to ascertain in which Battalion(s) or other units he served through the Medal Roll for the British War Medal and Victory Medal. A copy is held in the KOSB Regimental Archives.

Useful Addresses

· Public Record Office Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 4DU (www.pro.gov.uk). The PRO has an on-line catalogue, but it is usually necessary either to visit Kew in person, or to engage a professional researcher.

· Army Personnel Centre Historic Disclosures, Mailpoint 400, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow, G2 8EX. Postal enquiries only. For a fee (currently £25) the APC will undertake a search of the records, and, if found, will provide a typed summary of the Record Sheet.

· Commonwealth War Graves Commission 2 Marlow Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, SL6 7DX (www.cwgc.org).

· The Army Museums Ogilby Trust’s web site at www.armymuseums.org.uk provides a list of useful addresses and bibliographies.

· National Army Museum Royal Hospital Road, London SW3 4HT (www.national-army-museum.ac.uk).

· KOSB Regimental Archives The Barracks, Berwick-upon-Tweed (kosbmus@milnet.uk.net). Access to the Archives is available by prior appointment. In the case of postal or e-mail enquiries, a small search fee (£5 - £20, depending on the amount of research involved) will be charged.
