BE THE BEST
BE A TA INFANTRYMAN

If you are aged between 18 and 28 years (or if you are over 28 and have previous military experience or specialist skills), are medically fit, and are prepared to consider a challenge, then we want to hear from you!

The Territorial Army (TA) provides one quarter of the strength of the British Army, and is made up of men and women from all walks of life. It is a dynamic organisation consisting of highly committed volunteers providing additional flexibility and adding to the expertise, firepower and sustainability of the Regular Army. You’ll get the training you need to perform alongside the Regular Army, and you’ll get fit, learn new skills, enjoy a great social life and get paid!

Some questions and answers

  • Question: What is my commitment if I join?
  • Answer: You must do a minimum of six weekends a year, plus a two-week camp, which could be abroad. There is a weekly Training Night on Tuesdays, and a Training Weekend is arranged about one weekend in every three. While this is a minimum commitment, many people soon find they are able to devote more of their own time to TA activities by attending more training sessions.·        Will I be paid, and if so, how much?·        All ranks are paid on joining the TA, and this increases with time and rank. If you train on a Tuesday night, you will receive ¼ days pay, plus a refreshment allowance of  £5 + and your travel costs. On top of this we pay a TAX-FREE ANNUAL BOUNTY, which ranges from £400 in your first year to £1050 in your fourth and subsequent years, provided you complete your annual training requirements and are certified efficient by the Commanding Officer
  • Question: What will I do?
  • Answer: On weekends you will train in the Borders or at other training areas in Scotland or Northern England. You will learn, amongst other things, to handle weapons, read a map, give first aid, use radios and live and fight in all terrains. You will also keep fit by playing sports, learn some adventure training skills and join in the great Company social life. On Tuesday nights it is mostly indoor training covering many of the above activities. By serving in the TA you will gain confidence in yourself, improve your confidence skills and learn how to use your initiative.
