Borderers, on this day 29 Jan 1991 members of the 1st Bn would depart Redford Barracks in Edinburgh for Saudi Arabia. The advance parties had deployed on the 20th, the Bn vehicles and stores had been loaded onto ships at Southampton and were on route to Al Jubail. Travelling by coach to Brize Norton with their kit including 6 NBC suits each, arms full of vaccinations’ including anthrax, bellies full of NAPS tablets which all left some weird side effects. Here they would see a Kuwait airlines 747 which would fly them to Dahran airbase in Saudi for the Gulf War.
Having been mobilised on New years day the Bn had conducted an intense training period as well as painting every vehicle and piece of equipment sand. Training had focussed on NBC and first aid, every Borderer paid attention as the NBC threat was very high. By the late evening of 30 Jan the Bn was complete in Camp 4 in Al Jubail under Command of Lt Col Chris Darnell.
